New vs Refurbished Medical Equipment

Two routes, one decision framework

New and refurbished equipment are not competing philosophies; they are two supply routes evaluated against the same clinical requirement, budget window and expected service life.

New equipment offers current-generation technology, full manufacturer warranty and predictable lead times. Refurbished equipment can reduce acquisition cost and shorten delivery time, with the trade-off that availability depends on what is in the market at that moment.

Where refurbished works well

Mature technology categories where clinical performance has been stable for several generations tend to refurbish well — conventional radiography, mobile C-arms, patient monitoring and many cardiology diagnostic systems.

Refurbished is also useful when a department needs a second unit for redundancy, a backup during a planned upgrade, or capacity for a satellite location.

Where new is usually the right call

Choose new where the clinical programme depends on the newest detector, software or dose-reduction capability, where a long service horizon is expected, or where tender conditions require current-generation equipment with full manufacturer support.

What to verify on a refurbished unit

Unit-level history: year of manufacture, previous usage indicators, replaced components and the scope of refurbishment performed.

Condition of consumable-adjacent parts: detectors, tubes, batteries, cables and mechanical drives dominate the lifecycle cost of a refurbished system.

Availability of spares and software support for that model and generation, plus what warranty is offered on the refurbished unit.

How we present the options

For each enquiry we identify what is available through both routes, describe the condition of any refurbished unit honestly, and leave the evaluation to your team. Availability of refurbished equipment changes continuously, so options are always confirmed at the point of quotation.

This guide is educational only. Specifications, availability and regulatory status are confirmed per quotation and per unit.
